Muscle hypertrophy refers to an increase in muscle mass and cross-sectional area.
It occurs when muscle protein synthesis exceeds muscle protein breakdown, resulting in positive net protein balance in cumulative periods. This can be achieved through resistance training and protein intake, which stimulates muscle protein synthesis and leads to decreases in muscle protein breakdown
Strength training is used to regulate muscle hypertrophy.
Strength training causes neural and muscular adaptations which increase the capacity of an athlete to exert force through voluntary muscular contraction: After an initial period of neuro-muscular adaptation, the muscle tissue expands by creating sarcomeres and increasing non-contractile elements like sarcoplasmic fluid.
Muscular hypertrophy can be induced by progressive overload (a strategy of progressively increasing resistance or repetitions over successive bouts of exercise to maintain a high level of effort).
